Did you know Ackbar’s first name was Gial?
I didn’t know that until today, flipping through the Star Wars Essential Guide to Warfare at Barnes & Noble. I guess the name was made up for the book, as I’d never heard it before in any source. (In my defense, the book came out not too long ago — 3 April 2012 — so this isn’t exactly OLD news… I’m just a LITTLE late.)
As of right now, StarWars.com still only lists his name as “Ackbar,” though Wookieepedia has updated accordingly.
Personally I don’t think Ackbar needed a first name. I’m not too happy right now, but I’m sure the name will eventually grow on me.
(I can’t stop picturing Rupert Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Giles Ackbar.)
UPDATE: I did a bit of research. The name “Gial” for a Mon Calamari has existed since February 2008, where a “Gial Gahan” (click for a Wookieepedia link) appeared in the Star Wars: Legacy comics. Still not sure why it was chosen for Ackbar’s first name.
